Winning Together

Situated in the heart of London, St Marylebone CE School is a thriving example of how great education can be. With a culture of achievement fuelled by a love of learning, Emilie Spieler, Food Technology teacher has taken her passion to another level in the classroom. Embracing the world of vertical farming, Emilie sought out a hydroponic solution to bring learning to life for her students and found the Urban Cultivator.

Driving the sustainability agenda by bringing learning to life

Spurred by an increasing interest in sustainability and the environment from her students, Emilie and her colleagues in the Design and Technology department are driving this agenda both in their own lessons and across the wider school community. With limited outdoor space the cultivator has enabled stage 3 and 4 students along with the 6th form to get hands on with growing their own produce and using it in their cooking.

Emilie comments, ‘We’re mindful that many of our students have minimal green-space access here in central London. Providing them with the ability to observe the whole planting and cultivating process not only gets them up close and personal with nature, it provides the creativity to explore what they’re growing and play with taste, texture and simply experiment with food and cooking.’

The students have extended their hands-on experience to explore wider global food related issues from production to responsible sourcing, food waste and nutrition.

Emile adds, ‘Taking technology like the cultivator into the classroom brings sci-fi into reality and shows young people the experience we can now all have with food and the importance of being curious about this resource – what we’re eating, how we grow and where it comes from. These are some of the fundamental challenges we face as a society and for the health of our planet.’
