Sky has a history of taking the lead on environmental issues: it became the first media company to go carbon neutral; and has been committed to reducing its impact on the environment for over 15 years. Working closely with workplace catering experts Gather & Gather, they have created ‘The Garden’, a distinctive and collaborative canteen space. And by growing their own microgreens and herbs in their Urban Cultivator XL, they have put sustainability front and centre of the eating experience for everyone at Sky.

Working to create both an engaging experience for employees and bring a point of difference to the menu for the 9,000 employees based at the Osterley campus the cultivator takes center stage in the open plan restaurant. Caroline Sheehan, Catering Manager is taking the lead on cultivating the microgreens and herbs ensuring there is a continuous crop to harvest every day for their lush salad bar.

Caroline commented, ‘Starting with pea-shoots I’ve taken to planting hearty sunflower and wasabi nasturtiums. Providing fresh, nutritious microgreens to our service every day is why I invest the time in growing our own. I love the ability to get hands on with planting our own produce – it brings a smile to my face every time when I see those first shoots appear!

She continues ‘As part of Sky’s Net Zero goal by 2030 we’re pushing ourselves as a catering team to find better ways of sourcing, cooking and managing food waste every day. The cultivator allows us to take responsibility for growing our own, better-quality food and ensure healthy options for our customers. Their feedback tells me we’re doing the right thing.’
